Queen Elizabeth II Was A Bookworm In Her '40s Princess Days (PHOTO)

PIC: Queen Elizabeth Like You've Never Seen Her Before

Queens: They're just like us! Before Queen Elizabeth II was busy running Great Britain, she was just a little girl, you know. In honor of Her Majesty's 87th birthday on April 21, we revisit a simpler time in her life, when her primary concerns were far more minimal than her responsibilities today.

Enter Windsor Castle, June 1940. Fourteen-year-old Elizabeth, then a mere princess, sat by the window with her nose in a book -- remember those? We can certainly relate to an image of a young girl reading for fun and fiddling with her pearls. We're crazy about her lacy Peter Pan collar, which serves as a lovely complement to the then-princess' patterned dress.

As Elizabeth gets older, she shows no signs of slowing down. Nowadays she's a Bond Girl of sorts, is on great terms with fashion designers and still knows how to make a style statement. Queen Elizabeth, enjoy your birthday today -- we hope you have time to squeeze in a good read.
