Bolder Boulder: Police To Review Security Procedures For Memorial Day Race After Boston Marathon Bombing

Police To Review Bolder Boulder Race Security

Following Monday's fatal bombing at the Boston Marathon, Bolder Boulder race director Cliff Bosley said organizers and law enforcement officials will meet in the weeks leading up to Colorado's largest 10K race to make sure the event is safe.

"First and foremost, our prayers are with those who were injured and killed (Monday)," Bosley said. "Safety and security of Bolder Boulder participants is a top concern."

Two deadly bombs exploded Monday near the finish line at the Boston Marathon, the nation's oldest race.

Bosley said the Bolder Boulder contracts with "hundreds" of security officials -- including law enforcement officers from local agencies and security officers from a private company.

The Bolder Boulder is May 27. In recent years, the 10K has drawn more than 54,000 participants.

Following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, race organizers took extra security steps that are still in place today, including securing the perimeter at Folsom Stadium where the race finishes.

Leading up to the race, organizers meet regularly with officials from the University of Colorado and the Boulder Police Department. Bosley said race security will be at the top of the agenda given the tragedy in Boston.

Race organizers review security plans on a yearly basis, he said.

"I'm hesitant to talk about specific precautions at the Bolder Boulder in case somebody is eyeing the playbook," Bosley said.

Boulder police Chief Mark Beckner said Monday that "it's way too early" to talk about security changes at the race, but his department and race officials will be discussing additional security measures.
