Talent Contestants Singing In Spanish

After three thrilling weeks of Blind Auditions, NBC’s hit singing competition “The Voice” returns this week with its anticipated “Battle Rounds,” in which contestants go voice-to-voice against their own teammates for a spot to the next round.

As the show moves forward, however, it’s certainty spotlighted a growing trend in English-language talent competitions. Since Colombian superstar Shakira joined the show for season 4, audiences have seen a rise in Spanish-language auditions from competitors.

Latina singers Cathia, Monique Abbadie, and Mary Miranda highlighted their singing chops by choosing Spanish songs for the Blind Auditions (all three joined Team Shakira, of course) and Florida-based rocker Karina Iglesias added a Spanish bridge to Melissa Etheridge’s “I’m The Only One” and was picked up by Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine.

But these four Hispanic ladies are definitely not the first to grab the coaches’ attention whilst singing in their native tongue. Last season, Mexican singer Julio Cesar Castillo became the first contestant to ever sing entirely in Spanish with Ricthie Valens’ adaptation of “La Bamba.” Other talent competitions like FOX’s ‘American Idol’ and ‘The X-Factor’ as well as NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” have also had their share of Spanish-language crooners in the past.
