We all have goals and dreams we hope to achieve, but sometimes we allow self-doubt and naysayers to creep into our lives and fill us with negative energy. Whether others constantly tell you that your dreams can't happen or whether you're telling yourself that nothing's going to go your way, Pastor Joel Osteen says that this negativity can be redirected to take you out of your rut.
"It takes the same energy to believe as it does to worry," Osteen says in this clip from the April 7 episode of "Super Soul Sunday Presents: Oprah's Lifeclass." "So you get up in the morning and you think, 'Oh, man. I'll never get the right breaks and I've got to go to work and I don't like this job.' It's the same energy to turn it around and say, 'Lord, thank you for the gift of this day. Thank you that I'll meet the right people, thank you that I have the talent, thank you that I'm creative.' Just turn it around. It's the same energy -- just use it in the right direction versus the wrong direction."
Some people have been raised to be negative, surrounded by it for their entire lives, and may feel unable to escape the negative recording that repeats in their minds. Even in these extreme cases, Osteen says it's important to make the conscious effort toward positivity. "When the negative thoughts come -- and they will; they come to all of us -- it's not enough to just not dwell on it... You've got to replace it with a positive thought."
To help people cope with their negative experiences, Osteen wrote the following mantra in his book I Declare: "Every setback means you're one step closer to seeing the dream come to pass."
He explains in the clip, "You have to come to your closed doors before you get to your open doors... What if you knew you had to go through 32 closed doors before you got to your open door? Well, then you'd come to closed door number eight and you'd think, 'Great, I got another one out of the way'... Keep moving forward. You're learning from them and you're one step closer to the open door."
