Robert Redford wants to clarify something about his involvement in "Captain America: The Winter Soldier": He's not merely playing a S.H.I.E.L.D. muckety-muck. "[I'm] the head of S.H.I.E.L.D," Redford told Spinoff Online on Tuesday, when asked during a roundtable press conference about his Marvel role.
"The 'Captain America' thing is just a very simple thing," he said. "I wanted to do something different. I wanted to do something just to be different. Something bold, different. And that felt like a good thing to do. That was it, nothing more to it than that. Well, it's bold in terms of expectations, I guess."
Deadline.com reported Redford's deal with Marvel on March 22. His "Captain America" role was previously compared to Ralph Fiennes' character in "Skyfall."
Asked by the Los Angeles Times why he wanted to star in a superhero movie, Redford offered that it appealed to his inner child.
"I think these films are really powerful. I think they're great. This is the kind of film I would have loved to see as a kid," he said.
Coming into 2013, Redford had only appeared in three films since 2003, but he's got both "The Company You Keep" and "All Is Lost" coming to theaters this year.
"I think a lot of people think I don't do it anymore," Redford recently told Esquire about being an actor. "Well, I've gone and done other things. Not so much time off as focused on Sundance. Too many hands to be shook, too many sponsors to thank. I'm very happy about that -- I'm not going to turn a cold shoulder to success -- but I'm not comfortable doing it. It's taken me farther away from what I love -- to be the artist at work. That's what this last year was about, with 'The Company You Keep' and ['All Is Lost']. That's where I want to be now."
