Luxury cruise line Cunard has scaled back its formal dress code allowing for more casual attire on certain nights, reports the Telegraph. Now, formal dress will only be required three times a week on Transatlantic crossings and twice weekly on sailings to locations like the Mediterranean and Scandinavia.
Evening wear designations will change from "formal," "semi-formal,"and "elegant casual" to "formal" and "informal." Those who opt out of dressing formally will only be able to access the ships’ main buffet restaurants plus the Winter Garden and Garden Lounge bars on formal nights.
"We did research which showed there is tremendous loyalty to Cunard but it also told us that some people who want luxury travel wouldn't cruise with us because they look at Cunard as being too formal and too old fashioned," said Cunard president and managing director Peter Shanks as quoted by Travel Weekly.
On the other hand, according to the Daily Mail, some passengers are up in arms about the decision, though others have vowed to dress formally regardless.
The change will take effect on the Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria when their sailing seasons start this year.
