Jedi knights may soon be able to perform legal marriage ceremonies in Scotland. Yes, you read that right.
Currently, only religious and civil marriage ceremonies are legal in the country. But the Marriage and Civil Partnership Bill contains a measure that would legalize marriage ceremonies by "belief"-based groups.
What does this mean, exactly? The Free Church of Scotland has speculated that the bill could allow organizations like the Jedi Knights Society to perform legal wedding ceremonies -- in addition to more accepted groups, like the Humanist Society of Scotland.
"There are loads of people in a diverse society like this for whom belief can mean virtually anything -- the Flat Earth Society and Jedi Knights Society -- who knows?" said Free Church Reverend Iver Martin. "I am not saying that we don't give place to that kind of personal belief, but when you start making allowances for marriages to be performed within those categories then you are all over the place."
According to Britain's 2011 census, approximately 177,000 British people identify as Jedi Knights, making them the largest "alternative religion" in England and Wales.
There is already protocol for "marriage" in the Jedi Church: members can stand before a Jedi minister and recite vows like, "In forces of darkness and forces of light, wherever you may go and whatever you may face, do you promise to share your life in marriage with Jedi _____ ?"
The Scottish bill will be in a period of consultation until Wednesday, after which it will be submitted to the Scottish Parliament.
