Ashaya Miller Shot: Hammond Girl, 15, Fatally Struck By Bullet Fired Through Kitchen Window

A 15-year-old girl was shot dead over the weekend in suburban Calumet City, just south of Chicago's Far South Side.

Police say the teen girl, Ashaya Miller of Hammond, Ind., was shot "several times" around 8:50 p.m. in the 500 block of Ingraham Avenue, according to the Tribune.

The Calumet City Police Chief told CBS Chicago Miller was visiting friends or relatives in the suburb when someone shot through a kitchen window, striking the teen with a bullet.

Miller was taken to an Oak Lawn hospital where she was pronounced dead at 11:13 p.m. on Sunday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office. Police were still looking for a shooter as of Monday.

The 15-year-old's death came the same weekend that two were killed in the city and 11 more injured in violent deaths in Chicago.

DNAinfo Chicago reports 37-year-old Sanchez Mixon was beaten to death on the 47th Street Green Line 'L' platform while fighting with another man just before noon Saturday. Mixon was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Later Saturday night, 16-year-old Arrell Monogan was shot in the shoulder in the 2400 block of West 58th Street in the city's Gage Park neighborhood, according to the Sun-Times. The South Chicago teen was shot around 7 p.m. Saturday and pronounced dead less than 90 minutes later.

According to the Sun-Times, 11 more injuries were reported around town over the weekend, including a 15-year-old boy who was shot in the head in Lawndale Sunday afternoon and a sergeant with the Metra police department was stabbed in the leg several times trying to break up a fight at Union Station.

Prior to the weekend, there have been five other March homicides in Chicago, according to RedEye's homicide tracker, including 6-month old Jonylah Watkins who was shot on March 11.
