Sybil Christopher, the woman Richard Burton left to marry Elizabeth Taylor, has died.
Christopher, who died at age 83 in New York City Thursday, was a well-known theater producer and the founder of Arthur, one of Manhattan's most popular celebrity hotspots in the 1960s.
For most people, though, Christopher is remembered as the woman Richard Burton left for Elizabeth Taylor in 1963. Burton famously fell in love with Taylor while filming the 1963 epic "Cleopatra." Both Taylor and Burton were married at the time -- Taylor to fourth husband Eddie Fisher and Burton to Christopher, his wife of 14 years and the mother of his two daughters.
Christopher filed for divorce in December 1963. According to the Telegraph, Christopher was awarded custody of her children with Burton and a settlement of $1 million -- a relatively huge sum at the time. On March 15, 1964, just nine days after Taylor's divorce from Fisher was finalized, Burton and Taylor married.
For her part, Christopher maintained a tempered perspective on Burton's affair with Taylor, reportedly describing it as “just something that happened."
