White smoke emerged from the Sistine Chapel chimney on Wednesday evening, indicating that a new Pope had been chosen.

The smoke appeared at 7:05 p.m. local time and 2:05 p.m. Eastern Time.

who is the new popeAbout an hour later, the Pope's identity was revealed as Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, who takes the name of Pope Francis. Bergoglio, age 76, is from Argentina. He was ordained for the Jesuits in 1969, per this profile.

Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran appeared on the balcony of St. Peter's shortly to shout "Habemus Papem!" ("We have a new pope!") and reveal the identity of the new Pope.

Bergoglio will be the 266th successor of St. Peter and the leader of the Catholic Church consisting of 1.2 billion Catholics.

Today was the first full day of voting. A Vatican spokesman had said previously there was "no reason" for the conclave to last long.
