Mexican actor, director and producer Gael García Bernal spoke about his new immigration documentary "Who Is Dayani Crystal?" in an interview with El Cafecito posted on Wednesday.

The film traces the path of a migrant's body found in the desert of Arizona.

"This film is about migration, it's about humanity -- it is perhaps one of the most primal stories of humankind," García Bernal tells Cafecito host Feliciano Garcia.

It's not the first time García Bernal's work focuses on the subject of immigration. He also co-produced a series of short films for Amnesty International called "The Invisibles" about migrants traveling from Central America, across Mexico, and into the United States.

While illegal immigration from Mexico currently stands at net zero or less, according to the Pew Hispanic Center, migration from Central America has increased in recent years.

García Bernal said his interest in politics emanates in large part from growing up in Mexico.

"Latin America's a place where politics are very much at the surface," García Bernal said. "Unlike other places where politics seems like an extracurricular activity... There is always a political complexity to everything."
