Federal authorities from both sides of the border shut down a cross-border smuggling tunnel Friday in Nogales, Ariz.

The incomplete tunnel was being dug west of the Dennis DeConcini Port of Entry early in the morning, according to a news release. It extended 5 feet into the United States but didn't open up in this country.

A person who was digging when the tunnel was discovered was arrested by Mexican authorities.

Last week, authorities shut down a just-completed tunnel close to the Morley Pedestrian Gate, also in Nogales, and seized more than 1,200 pounds of marijuana, an Immigration and Custom Enforcement news release said.

The hand-dug tunnel was about 68 feet long and 2 feet wide.

In the last three years, federal authorities have discovered and shut down 26 completed cross-border smuggling tunnels in the Nogales area, according to ICE. ___
