Detroit Cheesecake: Best Bakeries To Try Before Novi Cheesecake Factory Opens (SLIDESHOW)

Feb 23, 2013 | Updated Feb 23, 2013

While the new Cheesecake Factory coming to a metro Detroit mall has us, like anyone with a sweet tooth and a shopping habit, delighted, we' re not quite as enthusiastic as some.

The chain restaurant will have a homecoming of sorts when it opens its first Michigan location at Novi's Twelve Oaks Mall this year. Founder and CEO David Overton grew up in Detroit, according to a release.

We mean no disrespect to Overton, but we won't be running out to the mall as soon as they open their doors. For one thing, in the dead of winter we can't fathom a trip down I-96. But more importantly, we already have plenty of beloved local bakeries.

Sure, the restaurant is hugely popular, and for more than its "legendary desserts," though we're plenty intrigued by the Kahlua Cocoa Coffee Cheesecake. The release notes its "extensive menu" with more than 250 items and "generous portions," which perhaps helped land two of its entrees on the Center for Science in the Public Interest's list of most extreme meals, with 2,600 and 3,000 calories in the Crispy Chicken Costoletta and Bistro Shrimp Pasta dishes respectively. The restaurant does have a wide array of lower calorie "SkinnyLicious" meals.

What else to expect from the new Cheesecake Factory? "French limestone floors, decorative columns, hand-painted murals, contemporary lighting and an abundance of cherry wood," plus patio seating.

While the restaurant may have started from scratch with a family cheesecake business in Detroit, it's now a large chain with more than 100 locations across the country, and sometimes we're looking for a more mom-and-pop feel for our baked goods. That's why we've compiled a list of some of our favorite places to get cheesecake in metro Detroit.

Are you excited for the restaurant to open? While you wait, take our poll and check out some other local options for mouthwatering cheesecake below.
