Fall Nail Art To Try Now: Tarnished Metallic Manicures

I'm more than ready to lose these winter layers, but there is one area where I've had a change of heart about piling it on: my nails. Backstage at Fashion Week, manicurists were busy dressing up models' nails in textured lace, matte and shiny nail polishes and beads, crystals and other elaborate accents mostly inspired by the collections.

CND co-founder Jan Arnold worked alongside the nail brand's education ambassador Amanda Fontanarrosa to create distressed nail art for Michael van der Ham's fall 2013 show. The deconstructed fabrics and metallic shades found in van der Ham's designs worked seamlessly with the tarnished metallic manicures.

“For one of the nail designs, we used CND Fedora adorned with a gold and copper leaf pattern,” explains Fontanarrosa. “The second look incorporated CND Midnight Swim and Cityscape with silver leaf patches.” The almond nail shape added a feminine touch to the otherwise edgy look. To get this manicure, Fontanarrosa tells us that a small flat brush will make picking up gold and silver leaves simple as the foliage will cling to the bristles with static. However, be sure to apply to the nail while it's still slightly tacky from the nail polish. Be sure to seal the design with a shiny top coat.
