New York Fashion Week Backstage Beauty: Smudgy Mascara & Braids At Rodarte Fall 2013 (PHOTOS)

The Wildest Hair We Saw At Fashion Week

Rock 'n roll princess was the phrase being tossed around backstage at Rodarte's fall 2013 show -- and upon seeing the smudgetastic eye makeup and soft braided hairstyles, that about summed it up.

"You know, don't you ever go to the beach and you look great?" said NARS makeup artist James Kaliardos, referencing the melted, yet alluring eye look he created for the show. To get the smokey effect, he applied NARS eyeshadow in Bengali and Coconut Grove underneath the eye. He then dipped a mascara wand into the brand's new eye paint pots and dotted on top of the shadow. "It's supposed to look like the mascara has fallen down … from humidity," Kaliardos added. To give the models' a healthy glow, he applied NARS blush in Sex Appeal right beneath the bone, in the hollows of the cheeks. He completed the look with Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Belle Du Jour, a lush nude color that didn't detract from the eye look.

The romantic hair created by John Frieda hairstylist Odile Gilbert was a soft contrast to the dramatic eye look. Gilbert began by working in lots of John Frieda Frizz Ease Styling Mousse, which gave the hair a bit of of wave. She then made two braids that connected in the back, which were completed with a small rosette formed with the ends of the hair. To create the shape, Gilbert wrapped small sections around a curling iron, spritzed with hairspray, then secured with pins. "It looks complicated, but it's not," she said encouragingly. Some of the models wore barbed wire headbands, designed by the Rodarte girls themselves.

Nail art was in mind when the Sisters Mulleavy teamed up with Sally Hansen to create the metallic-tipped ombre nail look. Working off a beige-y nude base, each models' fingertips gradated from gold to black.
