Fun., Best New Artist: Grammys Winner Bests Frank Ocean, The Alabama Shakes, The Lumineers, Hunter Hayes

Here's Your Best New Artist

Fun. took home the award for Best New Artist at this year's Grammys, beating out Frank Ocean, the Alabama Shakes, Hunter Hayes, and the Lumineers.

The group's Jeff Bhasker-produced album "Some Nights" has been wildly hailed as a smart take on the pop rock genre. Frontman Nate Ruess (formerly of the Format) hides somber meditations on loneliness and disillusionment within danceable, sing-along tracks such as "We Are Young" and "Some Nights."

In an earlier interview, Ruess told The Huffington Post that he was nothing but excited about the band's nominations. "I'm pretty much just over the moon," he said. "It feels good to be recognized by other musicians or people that are part of the Grammy voting committee. I'm a voter too, so it's cool. It's like peer recognition, so I can't really argue with that. I think we're honored."

Fun. (stylized as fun.) was nominated for a total of six awards at the Grammys, tying Frank Ocean, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Mumford & Sons and Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys for the year's most nods.

In pre-awards buzz, Ocean and fun. were those most expected to take the prize, with Carly Rae Jepsen among those snubbed. Last year, Justin Vernon of Bon Iver took home this award.

The 55th Annual Grammy awards were hosted by rapper and actor LL Cool J and took place in Los Angeles.

The Recording Academy votes on nominees and winners and is comprised of industry members. The Grammys official tagline is "Music's Biggest Night." While the bold claim has been challenged given the Academy's somewhat quirky taste, winning a Grammy remains mainstream music's biggest achievement.

Last year's telecast brought in 39.9 million viewers -- the largest TV audience for the event since 1984. An astounding 160,341 tweets per minute were also sent out during the broadcast.

2012 Grammy winners included Kanye West and Adele, who were richly lauded and combined for ten trophies.
