Thomas Lawson Lecture

This free lecture by artist Thomas Lawson touches on his career and project-driven work. Lawson lives and works in Los Angeles and is the editor-in-chief of East of Borneo and the dean of the School of Art at the California Institute of the Arts. The event is presented as part of the UCLA Department of Art Artist Lecture Series.

Opening reception for two shows at Steve Turner Contemporary. Curated by Lucy Chinen, Immune Stability is an installation by Lauren Elder and Amalia Ulman that showcases two sculptures, four garments and a video demonstrating the functionality of the garment. Parker Ito's See Also: Lai Fun, List of Pasta Soba is an installation piece that uses the gallery walls as props. Both shows on view through March 9, 2013.

A Point of View: Selected Gifts from the Laurence A. Rickels Collection, The Herbert and Dorothy Vogel Collection: Fifty Works for Fifty States at MOCA and MOCA's Permanent Collection: A Selection Of Recent Acquisitions.

Opening day for three exhibitions at MOCA Grand Ave. A Point of View presents selections from the 2011 gift by Laurence A. Rickels of 122 works made almost exclusively between 1993 and 2003 by Los Angeles artists. The Fifty Works for Fifty States project includes works by Carl Andre, Lynda Benglis, Dan Graham, Joan Jonas, Edda Renouf and Richard Tuttle. Also check out Ben Jones and Jeffrey Deitch in Conversation at the West Hollywood Library Council Chambers at 3 p.m. Ben Jones: The Video is open through February 24 at MOCA Pacific Design Center; click here for info on Jones' new book, Ben Jones Men's Group: The Video.

SASSAS presents a listening party at the Frank Israel-designed home of Los Angeles collector Marisa Arango. Music provided by artist/djs Sharon Lockhart and Laura Owens. SASSAS presents well-known and emerging artists, musicians and writers sharing their favorite sounds and music to benefit the sound concert series and other SASSAS programming. Tickets begin at $125.

Opening reception for an exhibition exploring the complex interactions of tourism, tourist destinations, and travelers. A group of artists, architects and writers explore systems designed to activate a person's experience of a particular locale. Participants include artists Kathrin Burmester, Ryan Griffis, Rodrigo Marti, Tucker Neel, architect John Southern, the collaborative team of landscape architect Sonia Brenner and community researcher Maryam Hosseinzadeh, collectives Cake and Eat It and the Untitled Collective, the editors of The Art Book Review and restaurant critic Jonathan Gold.
