With the Super Bowl around the corner, New Orleans is not only hosting the big game but also several fundraisers in its honor.
On Wednesday, current and former New Orleans Saints players hosted a charity flag football game with wounded war veterans as the opposing team. The friendly match honored retired Saints safety Steve Gleason, who was diagnosed with ALS in 2011, WWLTV reports.
“It’s a great week -- Super Bowl week — there is a lot of attention here so it worked out great,” New Orleanian Cooper Manning told the Times-Picayune about the event.
And fundraising hasn’t been limited to Saint’s players.
Ron Jaworski, former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback and one-time coach of the Saints, hosted a star-studded charity cigar party that benefited disadvantaged youth and Hurricane Isaac relief efforts, according to the Times-Picayune.
This is an annual event for Jaworski who has raised over $75,000 in the past three years, according to cigaraficionado.com.
The NFL Foundation has also taken advantage of Super Bowl week.
The nonprofit that supports charitable works of current and former NFL players hosted two celebrity fundraisers in the past week: a bowling and golf classic, according to nflcharities.org.
