As if moving wasn't stressful enough, imagine having the contents of your home held hostage.
It happens more often than you might think. So much so, in fact, that a bill was signed into law last year that granted the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration the power to fine moving companies up to $10,000 per day for holding customers' belongings hostage.
On HuffPost Live Monday, one woman shared her moving horror story. S.D. Moore told HuffPost Live host Nancy Redd that the moving company she hired demanded $10,000 in cash, $4,000 more than the contract price. When she refused to pay up, Moore got the Department of Transportation involved, but the mover still wouldn't budge.
"He then threatened to dump all of my furniture in the river, or in the parking lot of the Department of Transportation," said Moore, an Air Force veteran who said she feared losing many precious photos and mementos from her time served in Iraq and Turkey.
Moore turned to the customer-assistance service Move Rescue and eventually got her goods back. Still, she told HuffPost Live much of it was damaged.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration said it saw a 17 percent jump in moving complaints from 2010 to 2011.
