The winner for Best Supporting Actress in a TV Series, Miniseries or Made-For-TV Movie at the Golden Globes is Maggie Smith, who plays Dowager Countess Violet Crawley on PBS' "Downton Abbey."

The British thesp beat Sofia Vergara ("Modern Family"), Archie Panjabi ("The Good Wife"), Sarah Paulson ("American Horror Story: Asylum"), and Hayden Panettiere ("Nashville"). The eclectic category is a result of the somewhat controversial decision to combine the drama and comedy nominees for both series and miniseries/TV movies, while other awards ceremonies would shy away from trying to compare Panjabi's dramatic performance with Vergara's comedic role. Smith was not at the ceremony to collect her award.

Last year's winner, Jessica Lange, is nominated for a Best Actress in a Miniseries award for her role as Sister Jude in "American Horror Story: Asylum."

The 70th Annual Golden Globe ceremony is broadcast live on NBC from the Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills, California.
