Piers Morgan reacted to the White House statement about the petition to deport him on Thursday's "CBS This Morning."
Morgan has become an outspoken advocate of gun control in the wake of the Newtown shooting, and gun rights activists pushed back in a White House petition to deport the British host. The White House said Tuesday that it would not deport Morgan, and defended his freedom of speech.
"This is very bad news for the Americans and very good news for the Brits," Morgan joked on Thursday.
On a more serious note, the CNN host made another call for tougher gun control. He cited Britain's low rate of gun crime, and once said that as the father of young children, he would consider leaving the United States over the country's gun laws.
Morgan said he was committed to seeing a different outcome from the Newtown tragedy than from other shootings in the past. "After Gabrielle Giffords was shot in the head... I couldn't believe the reaction was a week of horror and mourning... and then everyone moved on and nothing changed," Morgan recalled. "And since then, massacre after massacre — something has to give and I think the tipping point was Sandy Hook."
He said it was not his goal to take away Americans' right to self-defense, but to ban assault weapons and put gun control on the country's political agenda. "This debate must be heard loud and clear," Morgan declared. "I just don't believe that the majority of decent civilized Americans do not share my view that something has to give."
