The words "diet" and "fitness" are Googled most frequently in January, which could mean bad news for restaurants specializing in sweet, caloric treats. This could explain the surge of fast food chains announcing new menu items this month.
Yesterday, Burger King released a statement that they would soon be serving new, all-white chicken nuggets and "molten chocolate" desserts. Today, Dunkin' Donuts has announced a number of additions to their menu as well.
Among the new items is a Dark Hot Chocolate, which a press release from Dunkin' Donuts describes as "rich" and "indulgent." A French Toast Bagel will also be available, featuring "the delicious flavors of cinnamon, egg, vanilla and butter with an authentic crust and a soft, chewy inside." Both will be available at participating restaurants nationwide for a limited time.
While these items seem to be a simple fusion of new flavors and existing products, Dunkin' also has some slightly more innovative revamps in the works. Last week, it announced testing for a gluten-free treat, allowing it to join the ranks of fast food chains that have tweaked their menus to meet the needs of those with Celiac Disease. In October, it announced the release of "Bagel Bunchkins," or ball-shaped, bite-sized bagels Ă la donut holes.
