'The Vampire Diaries' Midseason Premiere: Julie Plec Reveals What's Next For Damon, Stefan And Elena

Julie Plec Teases 'The Vampire Diaries' Midseason Premiere

Now that season 4 of "The Vampire Diaries" is at its halfway point, what's next for residents of Mystic Falls? More drama, of course.

If you haven't watched the winter finale, stop now! Spoilers below.

Creator Julie Plec chatted with TVLine.com about the upcoming episodes, dishing the goods on the epic love triangle between Damon, Stefan and Elena, Tyler's grief after his mother's death and Jeremy's new profession as a vampire hunter.

Elena [Nina Dobrev] is no longer sired to Damon [Ian Somerhalder], but Plec says rather than be happy about it, Stefan [Paul Wesley] is enraged. (Damon and Elena did already make their relationship official).

"Damon was a little bit late in his realization that he was being selfish and needed to do the right thing by Stefan," Plec explains to TVLine.com, adding that Damon waited too long to tell Elena about the sire bond, in Stefan's mind. "The jig is up as far as Stefan’s awareness of what Elena and Damon have been up to. It’s not going to be pretty."

"Stefan is heartbroken. He feels incredibly betrayed and angry," she continues. "We’re going to see a lot of his point of view as we move forward."

But Stefan's not just angry at Damon -- Elena is also on his bad side at the moment.

"He’s pissed," Plec laughs. "When the break-up is civil, it’s usually the beginning of some pretty dark stuff still to come. The calmer the break-up, the worse the fallout."

As for the fallout following Carol Lockwood's death, Tyler [Michael Trevino] takes a step back in his hybrid leadership role.

"It’s a setback in that his confidence came from this feeling that he had a place and he had people that were looking to him. As his mom said, “You’re a leader of people like your father was.” He was really growing into that, and to feel like they all paid the price for that confidence will definitely set him back a bit," Plec explains. "The question is, how will he rebound from that?"

We have a feeling Caroline [Candice Accola] will play a big part in Tyler's recovery.

"Tyler’s going to struggle, and Caroline’s going to struggle in trying to help him," Plec reveals. "But if there’s one thing those two have proven again and again, it’s that when situations are at their most dire and their most extreme, they find a way to be there for each other. I think we can rest easy that that won’t have changed yet."

One thing fans will not rest easy over is Jeremy [Steven McQueen] and his new hobby.

"He’s going to be a hardcore, lean and mean vampire-fighting machine over the next couple episodes –- but with an unlikely coach in the form of Damon Salvatore," Plec says. "So there’s some fun to be had there and a lot of danger for both of them ... They’re definitely going to have to figure out how to get that mark to grow," she continues. "Damon’s not going to just unleash Jeremy into the vampire den until he feels like he’s properly trained and ready."
