Lawndale Fire Kills At Least 1, Injures 5: Chicago Police Investigating Blaze As Arson

A 30-year-old woman was killed and three others -- including two young children -- were seriously burned in a fire on Chicago's West Side that began around 4:30 a.m. early Saturday.

According to ABC Chicago, two children -- aged 5 and 9 -- suffered serious burns in the blaze in the 4200 block of West 21st Place in the city's Lawndale neighborhood and are not expected to survive. They, along with the 30-year-old woman and an adult male who was also critically injured, were taken to an area hospital.

The majority of the blaze was contained to the two-story apartment building's first floor, specifically a bedroom in the first-floor apartment, DNAinfo Chicago reports.

Two other victims, two women aged 84 and 60, were taken to St. Anthony's Hospital with smoke inhalation-related injuries that were minor, NBC Chicago reports.

While a police investigation into the blaze is ongoing, authorities told the Chicago Tribune that the fire is being investigated as an arson. Authorities told the paper that it appeared that an accelerant had been poured on some of the victims.
