A recent photographic series by French artist Nadege Meriau shows worlds rarely seen, but these images weren't shot in space. Meriau's work delves inside everyday foods like bread and meat to breathtaking effect.
In an email to The Huffington Post, Meriau explained that she wanted to portray food as animate, partly as a "response to the way it is mass-produced and packaged for supermarkets."
Some images are especially reminiscent of landscapes, which Meriau said was an attempt to evoke other representations of the natural world in Western culture, including romantic landscape paintings, science fiction and 19th century expeditions.
Meriau also wanted to viewers to look at everyday foods from a different and disorientating perspective. "My intention is to envelop or draw the viewer into the image," she explained, "as if he/she was touched or ingested by the food itself but if you look carefully there is always an exit point, a chance to escape."
Meriau was reluctant to disclose exactly which foods are in each image, but she revealed that those featured includes bread, brioche, watermelon, chicken, turkey and egg white.
