'O Mare,' Short Documentary About Stromboli Fishermen, Is Beautifully Haunting (VIDEO)

WATCH: Beautifully Haunting Documentary About Old-School Fishermen

BoingBoing points us toward this gorgeous short documentary about fishermen on the volcanic island of Stromboli, who muse poetically about life on the sea and underneath the island's peak.

"O Mare," by photographer and art director Gabriele Trapani, showcases the unusual contrast between the cool sea and the fiery Mt. Stromboli, which has enjoyed a nearly continuous eruption for the past 2,000 years. Trapani is a member of Wecrosstheline, a digital media label representing a group of independent photographers and filmmakers based in Italy and Belgium.

The video is haunting and profound for reasons we can't quite place. On a less serious note, we'd like to point out the beards on the men featured -- it's as if The Dude suddenly left his lazy ways behind him and took up fishing off the coast of Sicily.

Get a glimpse at these fishermen's way of life in the video below.
