A very happy congratulations goes out to Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip, who celebrate 65 years together on Tuesday, marking their Blue Sapphire anniversary.
Let's journey back to 1939: Back when she was merely Princess Elizabeth, the future queen, now 86, met Phillip, who was born into Greek and Danish royal families himself. She was a teenager and he a member of the British Royal Navy.
The couple quickly became pen pals and much later, they married at Westminster Abbey in 1947. (Because it was still war time, Elizabeth had to use ration coupons to buy the material for her Norman Hartnell-designed dress, which was imported from the United States.) Phillip, now 91, was then granted the title the Duke of Edinburgh, and Elizabeth was crowned queen in 1952.
The royal couple went on to have four children -- Charles, Anne, Edward and Andrew -- and eight grandchildren and continue to celebrate landmarks together. Last year's Diamond Jubilee marked Her Majesty's 60 years of reign.
But this week fetes an especially grand occasion! No British royal couple has stayed together for as long as Elizabeth and Phillip.
The palace reports that the two will celebrate privately.
