'In the House' Star Maia Campbell Opens Up About Bipolar Disorder (VIDEO)

VIDEO: TV Expert To Ex-Child Star: 'Bipolar Disorder Is Not Your Fault'

In the 1990s, Maia Campbell was a star on the rise, co-starring on the hit sitcom "In the House" with LL Cool J and Debbie Allen. Then everything fell apart after she stopped treatment for her bipolar disorder, turned to drugs and was arrested multiple times. Viral videos that appeared on the Internet showed Maia disheveled and acting erratically.

In 2010, Maia was arrested for theft and sent to a mandatory mental health facility. Now sober for two years, she voluntarily lives at a residential treatment center in hopes of transitioning to living on her own. Relationship expert Iyanla Vanzant sat down with Maia there to help her process the guilt and shame of her past and move on to a more healthy future.

In this clip, Iyanla tours Maia's room and sees clothes and makeup strewn about -- whereupon Maia admits that she shops for things to make her look good "because I feel ruined on the inside."

"Looking good on the outside is not going to change your inside," Iyanla replies.

Later, Maia opens up about her feelings. "There's a lot of pain that goes into my story, a lot of issues with my mom," she says. "A lot of times when I was out there running the streets that I bumped into the wrong person and they brought me down."

Iyanla urges Maia to take responsibility for and accept her past. "You had bipolar disorder," she says. "You were thinking on your own, and you weren't taking your meds. And what did that result in?"

"Chaos," says Maia.

"Maia, I want you to say this with me again: 'I have bipolar disorder and it affects my thinking,'" counsels Iyanla. "You didn't just wake up one morning with bipolar disorder. It was brewing under the surface for a long time. It's not your fault. It's not wrong. It's not bad. You just think differently."
