Walter Patmon Jr., Chicago Firefighter, Dies Within Hours Of Returning From Fire

The Chicago Fire Department has lost another one of its own following a small fire in the Beverly neighborhood Sunday night.

Walter Patmon Jr., 61, had responded to the small cooking fire on 99th Street Sunday and complained of shortness of breath back at the firehouse before going into full cardiac arrest, WGN reports.

Patmon was rushed to Little Company of Mary Hospital, reports ABC Chicago where he was pronounced dead at 11:21 p.m., according to Fire Media Affairs spokesman Will Knight.

Patmon had served in the firehouse at 1724 W. 95th St. in Beverly and was married with three adult daughters, according to Chicago Fire Department Spokesman Larry Langford.

Patmon's death comes days after the city's fire department suffered the loss of Capt. Herbert "Herbie" Johnson. Johnson died after fighting a fire in the Gage Park neighborhood on Nov. 3.

Following Johnson, Patmon's death is now the second for the Chicago Fire Department since two firefighters died in a building collapse in 2010.
