Pit Bull Shot: Chicago Off-Duty Cop Kills Dog During Attack

Pit Bull Shot, Killed By Off-Duty Cop In Logan Square

An off-duty police officer shot and killed a pit bull in the Logan Square neighborhood after the dog attacked a German Shepherd Wednesday.

The off-duty officer physically struggled with a pit bull, according to CBS Chicago, eventually macing the dog before drawing his gun. The attack happened near the intersection of Milwaukee and Armitage, reports the Sun-Times.

Both outlets said it was unknown whether the pit bull's owner was at the scene.

In September, police in nearby Berwyn shot and killed two pit bulls that had jumped a fence, attacking and killing a small dog and injuring its owner and an officer.

Earlier this year, Ald. Robert Fioretti (2nd) proposed an ordinance that would tighten the restrictions on pit bull ownership in the city after a jogger sustained near-fatal injuries from a pit bull attack at Rainbow Beach.

Illinois is one state that bans breed-specific legislation outright, but townships across the state have enacted local ordinances regulating or outright banning certain breeds. Meanwhile, the American Humane Association notes, "Any breed of dog can bite, and research suggests BSL does little to protect the community from dog-bite incidents."
