Claire McCaskill Election Results: Democratic Senator Wins Reelection Against Todd Akin

McCaskill Wins

Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) won reelection against Rep. Todd Akin (R-Mo.), projects CBS News and NBC News.

McCaskill had a sizable lead in recent days, according to HuffPost Pollster. Akin had a huge loss in support after he said that pregnancy could rarely result from a "legitimate rape." He was defending his position that abortion should be illegal, even in cases of rape. He later apologized after his comments drew a national outcry, but national Republicans condemned him. McCaskill supports abortion rights.

The Missouri senator faced one of the most difficult challenges to get reelected in Republican Missouri, but Akin's comments and her spirited campaign moved the race in her favor.
