UN Security Council: Push for Civilian Protection During Congo Visit

(Goma, May 18, 2009) - The United Nations Security Council, visitingthe Democratic Republic of Congo beginning today, should press forurgent action to protect civilians, a coalition of 68 aid and humanrights groups said today. The groups said the council should make clearto both the UN peacekeeping mission in Congo (MONUC) and the Congolesearmy that stronger measures to protect civilians are urgently neededduring military operations against Rwandan militias.
