2 LAPD Detectives Shot Returning To Station, Gunman On Loose

Two Los Angeles Police detectives were shot Tuesday morning and hospitalized, as police conducted a 25-block search for a gunman.

The detectives were returning to the Wilshire Police Station when the gunman opened fire at 4:30 a.m., according to NBC Los Angeles. Several sources reported that the detectives' injuries were not considered life-threatening. They have since been released from the hospital.

Officials tell ABC News that one of the officers was shot in the hand, and another was shot in the head.

The gunman was lying in wait near the station and ambushed the two, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Three individuals were reportedly detained, but it wasn't immediately clear whether they were suspects. The detectives exchanged gunfire with the shooter. He's described as wearing all black clothing with a black hat and black shoes, possibly in his mid-30s, according to ABC News.

Many streets were closed in the area of Venice Boulevard and La Brea Avenue as teams conducted a search.
