The Epidemic That Is Senioritis

I hope all the other class of 2013-ers can relate to this. Or if you've graduated you can probably remember this absolute horrid feeling. How do you deal with symptoms of senioritis? Is there a cure?

Senior year is supposed to be the best year of your high school career. Your last homecoming game, your last time singing the fight song, your last chance to do the things you've always wanted to do but were too afraid to. Then graduation rolls around and that notorious Vitamin C song becomes the anthem for your last escapades with your best friends. This could be true, but it is all over shadowed by a terrible disease.

Senioritis. People use this term loosely, but little know the true meaning behind it. According to UrbanDictionary.com, senioritis is defined as, "When you leave your backpack in your car trunk from 3 p.m. -- 8 a.m." This could not be more true.

I am a class of 2013-er and I'm graduating this year. That hasn't become a reality for me yet, as I see senior year as just another year waiting until high school is over. I've been feeling symptoms of absolute dread and loathe for coursework. You can probably tell that I don't enjoy doing my homework, as I'm typing a blog post while my political philosophy textbook is just sitting there, at the corner of my desk waiting to be opened.

I used to enjoy school. I was a very peppy underclassmen; I figured that if I made the most of my high school career, it would go by fast. Looking back, the past four years did go by speedily. It didn't seem like it at the time, but now it is going slower than ever. I can see the date I graduate on my calendar, but I don't actually see it ever approaching. Could that be because of the thought of the world ending on December 21? Probably. But it has more to deal with the fact that senior year is so dragged out it's absolute torture.

Am I trying to be cynical? Absolutely not. I'm just speaking the truth from my own experience that's taking place at this very moment. High school can be great, if you make it out to be. If you surround yourself with the right people and make an effort to do well, you'll graduate in no time. One of your biggest challenges will be combating against this disease.

It also doesn't help that I have (virtual, as almost every application is online now) stacks upon stacks of college applications! I have AP classes, a senior project, a social life to tend to, and my future to worry about. Senioritis is the absolute last thing I need right now.

I hope all the other class of 2013-ers can relate to this. Or if you've graduated you can probably remember this absolute horrid feeling. How do you deal with symptoms of senioritis? Is there a cure? If so, let me know. Until then, I'm just going to attempt to get motivated to finish my homework while listening to the entire One Direction album. And cue the ever-infamous teenage girl-sounding sigh.
