Anyone even remotely in the vicinity of the Oakland Coliseum complex on Saturday night probably has this sound forever etched into their memory: "UNTZ UNTZ UNTZ!"
That's because a rave thrown in the venue's parking lot from 6 p.m. Saturday evening to 2 a.m. Sunday morning blasted electronic beats into the warm night sky, keeping neighbors awake and drawing thousands of noise complaints.
The event, electronic music festival Beyond Wonderland, featured performances by 20 acts including Orbital, Avicii and Daedelus. The show was put on by concert promotion company Insomniac Events as a Bay Area version of a similar concert the organization has been throwing in Southern California for three years.
NBC Bay Area reports that, as far away as neighboring San Leandro, the city's 911 operators were flooded with hundreds of calls about the music, eventually directing irate residents to the Oakland Police Department to levy their complaints.
People living ten miles away from the venue complained of being kept awake at night.
According to KTVU, the Oakland Police Department received nearly 2,000 noise complaints about the show's loud noise.
Sunday evening, the city of Oakland and the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum issued a joint statement, apologizing for the "discomfort and inconvenience" caused by the noise. The statement said that the sound setup was adjusted after a sound check in the afternoon, but that those changes were "clearly not sufficient to control the impact" on residents.
This flood of noise complaints is only the latest scandal for the event's promoter, Pasquale Rotella. Rotella was indicted earlier this year on felony counts of embezzlement and bribe.
Rotella is currently out on $2.6 million bail.
