NYPD Gun Buyback At Bushwick's Evergreen Baptist Church Recovers 85 Weapons

NYPD Recovers Assault Rifle At Gun Buyback

85 weapons were recovered at an NYPD gun buyback program organized over the weekend at at the Evergeen Baptist Church in Bushwick, Brooklyn.

The daylong event on Saturday was sponsored by the NYPD and District Attorney's office. $200 was given to anyone who turned in a handgun. Those who turned in rifles received $20.

Of the 85 guns turned in, one was a Ruger Mini-14 rifle and one was a TEC-9. Several guns that were turned in were loaded.

One man turning in his handgun told CBS, "I’m a senior citizen. I had this thing a long time. I’m thinking, ‘If something happened to me today or tomorrow, it still could possibly fall into the wrong hands.’ So I said my best bet is to do the right thing and get rid of it.”

In the wake of an August shooting that injured a police officer in Queens, the NYPD held a buyback that recovered a staggering 509 guns.

CORRECTION: A previous version of this post incorrectly referred to the Mini-14 as an "assault rifle."
