Detroit Olympics: Group Makes Pitch For City To Host Summer Games In 2024 (SLIDESHOW, POLL)

PHOTOS: Olympics In Detroit?

While this season's Olympic fever seems to already be a distant memory, some Detroiters are looking forward to future summer games -- and hoping that soon they'll be a little closer to home.

One group is using Facebook to rally support for the 2024 Games to take place in Detroit, not an entirely absurd proposition after the city's seven failed bids for the summer Olympics, and little experience with the planning, media frenzy, and ensuing disappointment of hosting a major sporting event after 2006's Superbowl.

WXYZ spoke to past president of the USOC, Bill Martin, (watch the video above) to find out whether Detroit could have a chance to host the games. Unfortunately, for shot put, soccer and swimming fans out there, Martin said it would be "huge leap" for Detroit to host the Olympics today.

Though it's been decades since Detroit was the USOC's choice (it lost out to Mexico City for the '68 Games) and the city's confronted serious financial difficulties since, that hasn't stopped the 2024 supporters from beginning to tackle the logistics of hosting our own set of games. They're already whimsically naming the Riverfront as the location for the Olympic Village, or declaring that the city should sort out its public transit shortcomings in time for the festivities.

We can't help but attempt to image Detroit taken over by hordes of sports superstars and their fans. Where would they be spectating? Check out the slideshow below for some lighthearted suggestions for event locations, and let us know what you think of Detroit's distant dream of an Olympic bid by taking the poll.
