In case you were wondering, Mayor Bloomberg has never dared to go skinny-dipping in the holy waters of the Sea of Galilee.
Bloomberg reassured reporters on Monday and said, "I have swum — but with a bathing suit. It was in the Dead Sea, and you do float noticeably higher in the water, because it’s so salty.”
He did however have one regret to share about his swim. "The mistake I made is I dove in with my eyes open. That stung for a minute, I can tell you that!”
We imagine reporters exhaled a sigh of relief.
The mayor was responding to questions concerning Rep. Kevin Yoder's trip to the Holy Land, which Politico recently reported involved an alcohol-fueled swim in the nude.
More than 20 people are said to have participated in the swim. Yoder, a Republican from Kansas, recently admitted in a statement:
A year ago, my wife, Brooke, and I joined colleagues for dinner at the Sea of Galilee in Israel. After dinner I followed some Members of Congress in a spontaneous and very brief dive into the sea and regrettably I jumped into the water without a swimsuit. It is my greatest honor to represent the people of Kansas in Congress and [for] any embarrassment I have caused for my colleagues and constituents, I apologize.
The FBI probed whether any inappropriate behavior had taken place, but found no evidence of wrongdoing.
Israel's Sea of Galilee is the site where the Bible says Jesus walked on water.
