One of the "Today" show's newest faces appeared live from London Thursday morning.

Ryan Seacrest, who was widely rumored to succeed Matt Lauer as co-host of the NBC morning show before a new deal was signed, debuted on the "Today" show set in his role as special correspondent.

Seacrest signed a new deal with Comcast (which owns NBC Universal) in April, expanding his duties at NBC News and scaling back some at E! News. The network described his role as a contributor to NBC prime time news and entertainment programming, including the prime time coverage of the 2012 London Olympics.

While viewers have had the opportunity to see Seacrest's interviews with Olympian Michael Phelps and his family in days leading up to the games, Thursday marked the "American Idol" host's first appearance on the "Today" show set in his new capacity.

In the coming days, Seacrest said he will be interviewing Team USA on the field following the Parade of Nations to get their perspective on the Olympics Opening Ceremony. Seacrest will also report on social media and follow what he called the "culture of 24/7 information."
