Miami-Dade Gets A $10 Million Grant From US Dept. Of Transportation

How County's Spending $10M Grant

Miami-Dade County just got a lot greener, and not just in the wallet.

US Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood joined Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez Wednesday to announce that the department was awarding the county a $10 million grant to modernize county buses.

The old diesel-guzzling Metrobuses that currently traverse the roads will be replaced with new, hybrid-electric buses. In all, the federal government is sending $50 million to Florida to upgrade or repair transit systems.

President Barack Obama signed the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century authorization on July 6, giving the Federal Transit Administration the freedom to determine new safety standards and give more bite to oversight organizations.

The $10 million grant announcement comes at a time of change in Miami’s transit system. On Saturday, a new Metrorail line connecting Miami International Airport to major hubs in the city will open. The same day, the car-sharing program car2go will launch with a fleet of fuel-efficient cars stationed all over Miami.
