POLL: Would You Car-Share?

A fleet of adorable mini cars are coming to Miami, joining new green transit options including Deco Bike and the Miami Trolley.

Vehicle-sharing program Car2go will launch July 28, giving members access to 240 fuel-friendly, 2-person vehicles to drive around the Magic City -- with a free parking pass, to boot.

Car2go allows members to access any of their blue-and-white cars parked throughout Miami, to use for as long as they want. Locations of available cars can be pinpointed online or through a smartphone, which is also helpful for those prone to forgetting where they parked their vehicle. Once an unclaimed car has been located, users simply swipe their member card over a card reader on the windshield, and then take the car out for a spin.

“This wouldn’t have worked five years ago,’’ Miami Parking Authority Director Art Noriega told the Miami Herald. “But look at the demographic growth in Brickell, downtown and the Upper East Side. It’s younger, and this generation isn’t as in love with the car.’’

Membership requires a one-time $35 fee, and costs to drive range from 38 cents per minute, $13.99 for an hour, or $72.99 for the day. If it sounds pricey, there are perks: fuel is paid for by car2go, and so is parking when using a metered county parking spot (except near Marlins Park. Can't have it all!)

“When used alongside other forms of public transportation, [Car2go] serves to alleviate congestion and reduce emissions,” Katie Stafford, communications manager for car2go North America, said.

Car2go's program is already in place throughout Europe and Canada, as well as stateside in Austin, Portland, San Diego and Washington, D.C. The company is a subsidiary of Daimler, which also owns Mercedes Benz.

Would you use car2go to bop around Miami? We're so curious:

Want to give the cars a test ride? There will be two launch events, with free brunch, open to the public on July 28 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Wynwood Kitchen & Bar and July 29th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at BARU Urbano in Brickell.
