'The Amazing Spider-Man' July 4 Box Office: $23 Million On Holiday

'Spider-Man' Sets Off Fireworks At Box Office

"The Amazing Spider-Man" had quite the Fourth of July. The blockbuster film grossed $23.4 million on Wednesday, giving it an astounding $59 million through two days of release.

As THR notes, the $23.4 million Fourth of July intake is the second biggest gross on the holiday in box office history. "Transformers" earned $27 million on July 4, 2007.

With $59 million earned over two days, "The Amazing Spider-Man" could shatter the pre-release expectations that pegged the film at a six-day opening of around $120 million; now "Amazing Spider-Man" could gross as much as $150 million. (For its part, Sony is still estimating an opening week of around $130 million.) As HuffPost Entertainment previously mentioned, "Spider-Man 3" earned what was then an opening weekend record of $151 million when it was released in 2007, however -- unlike "The Amazing Spider-Man" -- that film didn't have the benefit of being in 3D. "Spider-Man 3" also earned its $151 million over three days, instead of what would be six for "The Amazing Spider-Man."

All of that is academic at this point, as Sony clearly made the right financial decision to reboot the franchise after only ten years. Not surprisingly, the studio has announced via Facebook that "The Amazing Spider-Man" is the first film in a planned trilogy. Will "The Amazing Spider-Man 3" include a moody emo dance number? Only time will tell.
