Detroit Storms Hit Communities With Rain And Hail, Leave 200,000 Without Power (VIDEO)

200,000 Without Power In Worst Storm Of Season

After torrents of rain, wind and hail hit the metro Detroit area Wednesday evening and continued into Thursday morning, 200,000 DTE customers are without power.

Four storms have hit locally in the last 48 hours, with 320,000 DTE customers losing power in total and more than 21,000 affected in the city of Detroit.

"We've been restoring customers as we go," said DTE spokesman Len Singer. "Each time a storm hits it means we have to reassess and re-evaluate the storm restoration plan."

Restoration work could continue into the weekend.

Singer said the storms of the last few days were the worst of the season so far, but not
unprecedented for a summer storm.

"We keep plugging away, and we'll have crews working around the clock," he added.

Though the storms have caused damage and other problems, like knocking out power to Detroit's crime reporting line (citizens are asked to instead go to their local precinct, and the outage does not affect 911 emergency calls), the rain is welcome for some as the metro area is hit with record high temperatures. The National Weather Service issued an excessive heat warning through Friday, when temperatures could reach higher than 100 degrees.
