So far, box office results for "The Amazing Spider-Man" have been -- well, amazing.
After earning $7.5 million from midnight showings on early Tuesday morning, the superhero reboot grabbed an additional $27.5 million throughout the day. That gives "The Amazing Spider-Man" an opening day total of $35 million, the largest Tuesday gross in history. As Deadline.com notes, that's more than the $27 million that the original "Transformers" scored on Tuesday, July 3, 2007.
With that kind of debut, "The Amazing Spider-Man" should shatter the pre-release expectations that pegged the film at a six-day opening of around $120 million; now "Amazing Spider-Man" could gross as much as $150 million. It should be noted that "Spider-Man 3" earned what was then an opening weekend record of $151 million when it was released in 2007, however -- unlike "The Amazing Spider-Man" -- that film didn't have the benefit of being in 3D. "Spider-Man 3" also earned its $151 million over three days, instead of what would be six for "The Amazing Spider-Man."
Not that the Sony accountants probably care too much. Coupled with a massive $50 million bow overseas last weekend, it seems clear that rebooting "Spider-Man" after only ten years was the right decision.
