"We had another word for something like this: it's called insanity."
That's how Steve Crampton described the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) on Liberty Counsel's "Faith and Freedom" program this week, Right Wing Watch reported. Of course, the conservative radio host didn't stop there, finding fault with the fact that Kylar Broadus, founder of the Trans People of Color Coalition who is openly transgender, was allowed to testify on behalf of the legislation.
"This is not about, as they couch it, equal rights -- it's about special rights, for homosexuals, gays, lesbians, transgender folks," Crampton continued. "What's gender identity in this context? I come in, God forbid, wearing a dress or something, and I want to use the women's restroom, you tell me no...I think ENDA, if and when it's passed, would render you in violation of federal law."
Interestingly, Crampton's rant seems to overlook another key component of the controversial legislation, which reportedly safeguards religious organizations’ constitutional rights and religious freedoms, also allowing them to continue to take sexual orientation and gender identity into account when making employment decisions.
Still, that component has also fallen under additional criticism from a number of conservative groups. As the Center for American Progress reported, the American Family Association has similarly slammed the legislation for not containing a "sufficiently broad exemption" for religious organizations.
