I have to come clean: I may be a fashion editor by day, but I'm a slob by night.
I had a boyfriend in college whose mother remarked (very kindly) about me, "When Christina dresses down, she really dresses down." As a fashion editor, my job requires that I dress up (and I love it, to be honest), but by the time I get home, I am ready to get comfortable and that usually means some combination of the following: a tank top and sweatpants or my husband's t-shirts and boxer shorts.
The irony of this is that I spend hours looking at photos of celebrities in their sweatpants and happily plopping them on my weekly worst-dressed list, as I sit at my laptop at home wearing an outfit similar to the one I am decrying. I justify my judgements by saying that they are stars and they should know they're going to be photographed, and me, well, I'm just a neighborhood mom, so who cares if I go out to move the car in my pajamas? My daughter's preschool teacher confided that she is disappointed when I'm not "work-ready" at school drop-off because she likes to see my outfit du jour. (I usually remedy that problem with my trench coat, which covers my sweatpants nicely.)
The truth of the matter is that we all have our "uniforms," clothes that we feel comfortable wearing in our homes. I had a friend in college who stayed in her day clothes until the moment she went to bed -- she claimed that if she changed out of them, she'd be less motivated to study.
I once worked with a celebrity shooting a commercial at her house. The interviewer asked her stylist what the star wore when she was lounging around, and the stylist answered, "Repetto ballet flats, of course." I turned around a few moments later to see this famous face walking past in sweatpants and Ugg slippers. So I guess I'm not the only one.
I guess I should make an effort for my dear husband. On days when he arrives home earlier than I do, the look of shock on his face when I walk in the door in my office finery is worth a thousand words. I do try sometimes -- black cropped leggings and a fitted tee are stylish, right? Yeah, no.
