Art.sy And Taryn Simon Make 'A Living Man Declared Dead And Other Chapters' (VIDEO)

Taryn Simon Presents A Living Man Declared Dead

Art.sy has begun a series of intriguing new short collaborative films that showcase artists reflecting on their own work. The first artist to take part in the series is Taryn Simon, the American photographer behind the Museum of Modern Art exhibition titled, "A Living Man Declared Dead and Other Chapters I-XVIII." The Art.sy short explores all 18 chapters of Simon's project, which was a four-year-long endeavor to trace bloodlines of various populations worldwide. From test rabbits in Australia to victims of genocide in Bosnia, the project is an expansive catalog of life, death, fate, and luck as it appears across the globe.

In the film, which Simon helped to create, the camera winds its way past each of the chapters of her exhibit, containing photographs of various subjects on display. Who are these mysterious faces and what are their stories? Like the rote repetition and endless content of Simon's exhibit, the film is a flutter of images accompanied by a poetic narration by Simon herself. "There is no conclusion or overarching declaration," she states, "It's about the difficulty of understanding what we are all doing here and what it all means."
