I'm a professional psychic. And a professional academic. Sounds like right brain/left brain confusion at its finest, no? It has not been confusing though it currently requires me to switch between the two different ways of processing, depending upon the subject. I have enjoyed the best that both types of intelligence have to offer. My own issue is how to combine the two ways of approaching problem solving instead of the constant switching back and forth I experience. This is an ongoing personal project.

But, I do believe that both concrete and creative ways of thinking are extremely powerful. Left brain thinking - logical, scientific, and concrete - has been highly valued in Western culture (notwithstanding the last eight years of non-analytical and fact-free governance at the national level, which is a whole new topic). My own boomer generation is a testament to in-the-box, hierarchical, authoritarian types of understanding. Not everyone has been convinced as I that intuition is a type of intelligence worth developing.

That seems to be changing. There is a burgeoning cultural awareness that the more creative, intuitive ways of processing information have enormous value in many facets of our daily personal and business lives. For instance, I was developing a talk for the Salt Lake County Library Employees on intuition last year and found several popular books that encourage interest in right brain development. For this post, I found some more that have been published since: Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking by Malcolm Gladwell, A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future by Daniel H. Pink, My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist's Personal Journey by Jill Bolte Taylor, Right Brain/Left Brain Leadership: Shifting Style for Maximum Impact by Mary Lou Decosterd. These are just a sample of recent efforts.

Grow Your Right Mind Muscles

So, people ask how they can develop their own intuitive abilities. There are some easy ways to start. What is more, developing your right brain skills is usually fun. Try some of the following and let me know how they work for you.

Intuition sharpening most often requires turning off your left brain chatter and expanding right brain functions. The key is to develop an allowance and receptivity of impressions, ideas, imagination, and images that arise. Approach intuitive exercises playfully, hopefully and confidently. Do not worry if you are not perfect; it is enough to simply exercise these innate muscles.

Meditation: Stilling the Left Brain and Inner Awareness
Many mystics have their students develop more inner and psychic awareness through meditation. This works because it is a way to quiet the constant stream of thoughts that wander through most of our heads.

Some ways to do this are:
-Get quiet and notice breathing or body sensations or being in the moment
-Listen to CDs of Guided Visualizations and Imagery Immersive Body Experiences
-Yoga, Massage, Hiking, Energy Work, Hot Tub

Left Brain Distraction with Play, Imagination and Creative Fun
It is also effective to distract our more logical thinking parts by engaging in more creative, sensual activities.

Some ideas are:
-Doodling, Farting Around, Daydreaming, Gardening, Playing Solitaire, Musing
-Go Beyond the 5 Senses: Music, Art, Singing, Emoting, Fiction, Passions, Dream work
-Break Routines: Use other hand, Close your eyes while eating, Drive different routes

Expanding Outer and Inner Senses
Specific exercises that work with your various inner and outer senses are very effective. Immersing yourself in each one of your five senses seems to support your sixth sense.

Here is an exercise for Expanding the Five Senses. Pick five days and during each day. focus intently on a single one of the five physical senses: touch, sight, smell, hearing, taste. For instance, for one entire day direct your attention consistently and constantly on hearing. Listen for all the sounds around you. What is loud, what is soft? What is usual or different? Immerse yourself in sound that day. Listen to music on stereo headphones so that the vibrations can be keenly felt. Indulge in a variety of musical and life sounds. Make noise wherever you go and really hear it and feel it. Then, on another day, pick a new sense to deeply explore.

Practicing using intuitive tools expands your intuitive ability Try playing with classic and modern divination tools such as: Psychometry, Telepathy, Crystals, Dice, Boards, Dowsing Rods, Palmistry, Tasseomancy (tea leaves), Remote Viewing, Astrology, Tarot, Runes, I Ching, Pendulum, Crystal Ball, Aura Reading, Palmistry, Angel Cards, Numerology. My blog at www.margaretruth.com has more information about some of these fun tools. Try them and keep a playful, non-evaluative approach to maximize the results.

And don't forget to let me know how you do!
