A 14-year-old boy died Tuesday evening a matter of hours after he was pulled out of Lake Michigan at the North Avenue Beach.

The boy, identified by the the Cook County medical examiner's office as George Sosa, had apparently gone to the beach to swim with two friends, ABC Chicago reports.

After those friends, both teenage boys, informed lifeguards that they could not find George around 4:30 p.m., the lifeguards headed into the water, found him, pulled him out of the water and performed CPR until paramedics arrived on the scene to take the teen to the hospital, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

The boy, taken in "extremely critical" condition to Lurie Children's Hospital around 5 p.m., was pronounced dead there at 9 p.m., according to the Chicago Tribune.

The Chicago Park District is investigating the incident, which marked the 25th drowning in the Great Lakes thus far this year -- more than a 90 percent increase over the same period last year, according to ABC.
