How To Clean A Fan Without A Hassle

Ahhh...it's pretty amazing how good a constant flow of air can feel on a blistering hot day. For those of us who aren't lucky enough to have air conditioners, an oscillating tabletop fan can be an affordable life-saver. Unfortunately, fans, and especially their blades, are dust magnets. Before you have your fan working overtime this summer, give it a clean and keep your unit lasting longer.

The first thing to do is to unplug the fan from a power source. Then, use a screwdriver to remove the front grille. Some fan grilles are held together with snaps. However, a few manufacturers glue their grilles together. In this case, abort the mission. Once you have the cover removed, unscrew the blade cap and remove the blades. Then, wipe down the inside of the grille and blades with a solution of mild dish soap and warm water. Use a cotton ball or Q-tip dabbed in the solution to remove any dust or lint in the crevices around the motor. Once dry, replace the blades, blade cover and grille. Finally, wipe down the outside of the grille to collect any lingering dust.
